Essex County Public Schools Names New Superintendent

Tappahannock, VA – Dr. Harry Thomas, III was appointed as the next superintendent of Essex County Public Schools at this evening’s school board meeting. His new position will be effective August 15, 2019. Thomas has more than 20 years’ experience in public education in Virginia serving as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and director of instruction. Thomas most recently served as the Chief Academic Officer for Fredericksburg City Public Schools.

“I am extremely honored and overjoyed to be selected as the next superintendent of Essex County Public Schools. The School Board and members of the school community have been exceedingly hospitable and welcoming. Essex County Schools has a storied history of academic excellence, and I look forward to partnering with the school system and the greater community to ensure a high quality educational experience for all students.”

Jacob Plummer, chair of the Essex County School Board stated, "The Board is excited that Dr. Harry Thomas III will be the new leader for ECPS. We believe incredible things can happen in a school where students are challenged, and where leadership is willing to take risks and put the energy, and enthusiasm into their work to let our kids know how important education is. I am truly excited to begin this journey with Dr. Thomas as he brings a spirit of teamwork, and a commitment to our youth."

Thomas earned a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from Virginia Tech, a master’s degree in education from James Madison University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Mary Washington College.

The Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) assisted the school board with the superintendent search process.
